Hotel Gigur
Hotel | This is a modern and simple hotel with somewhat smaller rooms and an excellent location on the shores of otherworldly Lake Mývatn. Enjoy a restaurant with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a truly magnificent view of the lake.
By the shores of magical Mývatn
It is impossible to describe Hotel Gigur without talking about its incredible location, just a few metres from the shores of magical Lake Mývatn. Myvatn is perhaps the most well-known attraction in northeastern Iceland, having been formed by volcanic activity several thousand years ago. Visitors often describe the lake as being like something from another planet, with its bubbling mud pools, strange lava formations, steaming fumaroles and volcanic craters.
At Hotel Gigur, Lake Mývatn quite simply takes centre stage. The restaurant treats guests to a panoramic view of the lake via floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll want to order an extra dish or two just so you can linger a bit longer and really soak up the view. When you head out the next day to explore your surroundings, you can either start hiking right from the hotel or take a longer trip around the lake by car or organised tour. Once you’ve had enough of Mývatn (if that’s even possible), you can take a 45-minute car journey to Húsavík – the whale-watching capital of Iceland.
Rooms at the hotel are fresh and functional, but perhaps smaller than what you’re used to. If you’ve got the whole family in tow, you may need to book several rooms.
