Add a bit of extra excitement to your stay on Iceland with a visit to the ice caves in the Kötlujökull glacier. You use snow grips to carefully walk over the ice and into the caves that are formed between high walls of crystal blue ice and sparkling snow.
The tour starts with pick-up in Reykjavík, Hveragerði, Selfoss, Hella or Hvolsvöllur, before the robust superjeep turns off from the main road and onto a smaller gravel road which leads to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. From here you travel towards the part of the glacier that is called Kötlujökull, where in recent years the glacier's movement has created ice caves of various sizes.
When you arrive and have disembarked from the vehicle, all you have to do is attach the snow grips and start walking towards one of the largest caves together with the guide. Layer on layer of ice are as if stacked on top of each other, and in many places it has an intense blue colour. En route into the cave it is almost impossible to comprehend that nature can create something so beautiful – the walls of dark ice rise up high all around you, and at the end of the cave the ice roof opens up towards the sky, allowing a bit of daylight into the cave. Walk around carefully, admire the snow and ice and take in the special atmosphere that it is not really possible to find anywhere else.
When you leave the cave there is time to walk on the glacier for a while and investigate it more closely (perhaps you will find some smaller ice caves that have been formed in the vicinity). You then travel onward in the superjeep to the pleasant coastal town of Vík, which has become known for its black lava beaches, before proceeding to the Skógafoss waterfall. Here you can be content to observe the waterfall from below or you can ascend the steps which lead all the way up to its top. Take the opportunity to enjoy the view over the area around Skógar once you are up there, because there are few places that offer a view such as this, which extends for miles. From Skógafoss you then travel back to the same place where you were picked up, together with lots of new memories to take home with you.
