Volcanic Wonders of Reykjanes Geopark (09:30/6,5 hrs) (A16)

From $143

Grindavík, once a thriving fishing village, now stands as a stark reminder of nature’s relentless power. After recent volcanic eruptions, the town is largely uninhabitable and still bears the scars of the events.

Discover the dramatic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula on this unforgettable tour, where human resilience meets the unyielding forces of nature. Explore the aftermath of the latest volcanic eruptions and see how Grindavík has been transformed by nature’s power. This region bridges two continents, creating a volcanic wonder along the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The journey begins with a pickup in Reykjavík and a scenic drive through volcanic terrain and along rugged coastlines to Reykjanes Geopark. Our first stop is the Seltún geothermal area, where bubbling mud pools and steaming vents showcase nature’s raw energy.

We then continue to Fagradalsfjall, Iceland’s youngest volcano. A 45-minute hike across still-warm lava fields leads to a viewpoint overlooking fresh lava from recent eruptions. The total hike is roughly 5.5 km with moderate elevation gain, suitable for anyone in good physical condition.

In Grindavík, you’ll witness how the town’s residents constructed protective barriers during the eruptions and learn about the dramatic fissures that have reshaped both the landscape and the lives of those who once lived here.

End the day with a meal in the village — we recommend the classic fish and chips made with locally caught fish — the perfect finish to a day full of memorable experiences in the volcanic landscapes of Reykjanes.
