The Beach Ride (8 AM/8 hrs/5 hrs riding) (C14)

8 hours $314

Experience the extraordinary, the volcanic beach, the river banks and islands of the Ölfusá delta and great views!

We put the horses on the trailer and drive to the small fishing village of Þorlákshöfn, where we start the tour by riding along the black beach. We follow the scenic Atlantic coast for a few kilometers on soft black lava sand until we reach the beautiful area where the great glacier river delta meets the sea. We then ride through shallow water across the delta and onto grassy sandbanks. The tour continues across wetlands and meadows back to the countryside in the Ölfus area, where the farm Vellir is located.

During the day, there are many opportunities to try the smooth gait "tölt" on excellent riding trails in beautiful surroundings that feel far from civilization and, weather permitting, offer a great panoramic view of the volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. We also have good chances of spotting various species of sea and wetland birds inhabiting the Flói bird sanctuary between the coast and the delta. After reaching the old cemetery at Arnabæli, we ride back across the meadows along the river Gljúfurá. We ride past pastures with grazing horses before returning to Eldhestar. Coffee and refreshments are served at the farm.

The tour can also start at Eldhestar and end in Þorlákshöfn, depending on the tide. A lunch break in scenic surroundings is included in the tour.
