Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull pick-up 8.00 AM/13-13,5 hrs (G04)
Experience Sólheimajökull on a guided glacier hike with an expert guide. Walk across ice, volcanic ash and dramatic crevasses while learning about the glacier’s history on a unique Icelandic adventure.
Join us and experience the mighty Sólheimajökull glacier up close. The tour begins with a briefing on the included glacier equipment and important safety rules, ensuring you feel confident and secure before the adventure. An experienced glacier guide will accompany you throughout the entire tour, ready to guide you and answer any questions along the way.
The adventure begins with a walk through a quiet, moss-covered valley leading up to the glacier from above, offering wide views over the surrounding area before stepping onto the ice. Next follows the short yet atmospheric continuation across pitch-black volcanic ash and sand – a dramatic landscape shaped by the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. Here, the interplay between fire and ice in Iceland becomes truly evident.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier extending from Mýrdalsjökull, known as the home of the powerful Katla volcano. The area is as wild as it is beautiful. Your guide will share insights into the glacier's history, geology, and how it is slowly changing with the climate. At the edge of the glacier, you will put on your crampons and step into an almost surreal world of ancient ice.
During the hike, you will experience how the forces of nature create spectacular formations: sharp ice ridges, deep crevasses, and impressive moulins where meltwater rushes down through the glacier. Here and there, traces of past volcanic eruptions appear in the form of ash layers carrying stories from both near and distant history.
The hike itself takes about 2.5–3 hours in total, including the approach walk, with 1–1.5 hours spent on the glacier itself. This is a unique and memorable adventure that provides a deeper understanding of Iceland's dramatic nature – and a chance to experience a living glacier while it is still possible.
If you choose pickup in Reykjavík, you will stop on the way to or from the glacier at some of Iceland's most magnificent natural attractions: the black sand beach of Reynisfjara and the waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
